Mechanical Diagnosis Therapy
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), also known as the McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach to the spine and extremities based on sound principles and fundamentals that when understood
and followed accordingly are very successful.
The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® is an active patient treatment philosophy that emphasizes prevention and intervention, and encourages patients to be in control of
their own treatment.
MDT is a logical, cost-effective process that evaluates the patient's problem quickly, to identify both responders and non-responders. Spine and joint pain are often mechanical in nature,
thus most responders will show patterns of response to pain and function so the physical therapist can classify accordingly. This classification is unique to MDT and provides a benefit to the patient
and physical therapist, because patients will be treated based on their individual mechanical syndrome.
Unique to MDT is a well-defined "cause and effect" relationship between historical pain behavior, response to repeated test movements, sustained positions and activities during the assessment
MDT emphasizes education and active patient involvement to decrease pain quickly, and restore function and independence, minimizing the number of visits to the clinic. A certified McKenzie
clinician will know when to provide additional advanced hands-on techniques until the patient can successfully manage the prescribed skills on their own.
