Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT)
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), also known as the McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach to the spine and extremities based on sound principles and fundamentals that when understood and followed accordingly are very successful.
The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® is an active patient treatment philosophy that emphasizes prevention and intervention, and encourages patients to be in control of their own treatment.
MDT is a logical, cost-effective process that evaluates the patient's problem quickly, and identifies those who respond to posture, sustained position, and movements.  Spine and joint pain are often movement-based in nature, thus most will show patterns of response to pain and function.  MDT provides a benefit to the patient and physical therapist, because patients will be treated based on their individual mechanical syndrome.
Unique to MDT is a well-defined "cause/effect" relationship between pain and patient-response to posture, sustained position, and movement during the assessment process.
MDT emphasizes education and active patient involvement to decrease pain quickly, and restore function and independence, minimizing the number of visits to the clinic. A certified McKenzie clinician will know when to provide additional advanced hands-on techniques until the patient can successfully manage the prescribed skills on their own.
